An important mandate of our group is energy efficiency and environmentally responsible construction. To address this, our project includes:
small footprint: most of our owners moved from detached homes, so the city is servicing fewer lots on our behalf
superior attic and wall insulation
triple-glazed window construction
heat recovery ventilation
energy-efficient heating by forced air over hot water
energy-efficient appliances
fluorescent lighting
purchase of 100% of our power from wind-generators through Bullfrog Power. As a result, our annual emissions footprint will be reduced by 80.737 tonnes of CO2, 206 kg SO2, and 135 kg NOx.
dual flush (3 and 6 litre) toilets
xeriscaping and water barrels for rain water collection
composters
centralized recycling containers, including plastics recycling
a centrally located "Give Away" shelf, for internal reuse of clothing, household items, etc.
Voluntary initiatives are encouraged among our residents:
car-pooling
availability of rental office space in the common house
a shared vehicle, which serves as an occasional second car or primary vehicle
shared bicycles
shared freezer, for those households who only need a small amount of additional freezer space
shared landscape tools such as lawnmowers (push and power), snow blower, etc.
Recognition
Prairie Sky was recognized for its efforts in sustainable living by the City of Calgary in October 2007. We were featured in a brochure that was distributed to Calgary households with their utilities bill.
We are listed in the "Envoy" category of Bullfrog Power's 2009 Alberta Green Index (100-499 MWh of green power purchased annually).
